Clear links are now shown between more fish oil and memory improvement.

The benefits of Omega 3 fats found in fish oil just go on and on. Evidence is now clear that there is a strong link between increased intake of fish oil and memory loss, or at least the reversal of memory loss.

And as well as improving memory, there is also evidence that taking more Omega 3 for brain development in infants is very important, and that more fish oil can also help us to improve our learning ability.

The range of brain related improvements from taking fish oil supplements is impressive. Researchers are now saying that taking omega 3 for brain improvement includes reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

A recent study showed that taking Omega 3 fish oil supplements for 6 months can improve our chances in each of these areas.  485 healthy people were tested using fish oil supplements, and the results showed improvements in age related memory loss,  and increased learning ability that was “almost double the reduction in errors on a test that measures learning and memory performance”.

So now it seems clear that along with a whole host of other benefits, Omega 3 memory supplements are well worth taking. Of course they aren’t memory supplements, they’re fish oil, but fish oil in your diet may well reduce the age related memory loss we all seem to suffer over time.

The active component identified in the study was DHA, a fatty acid that makes up the majority of the fats in our brains. DHA is found in the fish oil, and if you take the best fish oil supplements you ought to be getting plenty of DHA every day.

There is a clear Omega 3 depression link. Whether Omega 3 cures depression is not entirely clear, but it may well help a lot.

As anyone who has depression will tell you, it’s the worst thing that can happen to you. It puts you on a merry go round of ups and downs, and may well bankrupt you with the cost of all the pharmaceuticals you may well be prescribed.

Does something as simple as Omega 3 help depression? There are now Omega 3 depression studies that are saying it does. In fact there are a number of studies showing that levels of Omega 3 and depression are linked.

As with all these things the link between Omega3 and depression are not yet fully proven, but there is sufficient evidence to strongly suggest that for those suffering from depression taking Omega 3 fish oil supplements may well be worthwhile. At the very least they are very good for many other areas of your overall  health.

The evidence is strong. To quote some of the findings of a recent study:

“There appears to be a plausible link between rates of seafood consumption and rates of both depression and Bipolar Disorder, with lower seafood consumption being linked to higher rates of depression and Bipolar Disorder.”

And: ” Omega-3 supplementation may have an antidepressant role”.

Work is continually being done on the use of Omega 3 for depression. There are still many more areas to be studied, such as the ratios between Omega 3 fats and Omega 6 fats, and in particular the link between Omega 3 and specific disorders, such as Bipolar Disorder.
Omega 3 Depression

It was in the 1990s that studies started to pinpoint a link between depression and Omega 3 fatty acid intake. Studies started to notice a negative correlation between seafood intake and rates of depression. As seafood intake increased rates of depression were lower and vice versa. It seemed that in societies where consumption of seafood was low there was a higher rate of depression.

Unfortunately it takes a long time to establish a link that is sufficiently fully proven. Studies are still underway, and as the results are published more specific recommendations will emerge about what doses of Omega 3 fats to be taken for depression and how an increase in Omega fats will affect current intake of various pharmaceuticals.

However from the evidence now available it would seem for anyone who does suffer from depression there is a powerful reason to be taking daily Omega 3 capsules. To find what we consider to be the best Omega 3 capsules on the market today click here.

Not only is there a good possibility that they may help your depression, but they are good for your health generally. Omega for depression is an emerging area of study, but there are now clear links between the intake of Omega 3 fats and a reduction in a wide range of health problems, such as heart related health problems. There’s a range of health benefits of fish oil supplements. Improvements in cholesterol are one of them.

We’ve talked about many of the health benefits of fish oil supplements. There’s a range of health benifits of fish oil, amongst them to your heart. Lets have a look at Omega 3 and cholesterol today.

The results of a new study into the heart benefits of fish oil have been published in the Jan/Feb issue of Sports Health, A Multidisciplinary Approach.

It was a study of the heart benefits of taking fish oil supplements, or essential fatty acid supplements, the main component of which is fish oil.

The study was done on 36 pro football players from 23 to 41, who took either fish oil omega3 supplements or a placebo. They took 4 fatty acid supplements/capsules each day, and that provided them with 2560 mg of omega-3 fatty acids (650 mg EPA and 450 mg DHA in each capsule.)

The results of  the study backed up many other studies that demonstrate the benefits of essential fatty acid supplements in the form of omega 3 or fish oil supplements.

The football players had an improvement in their HDL levels (their good cholesterol) and a reduction in their LDL levels (their bad cholesterol).

And as well they demonstrated an improvement in overall triglycerides, the level being significantly lowered.

This is not the only fish oil supplements study to find a link between Omega3 and heart health. There are now numerous studies confirming a range of heart related health benefits of taking fish oil or Omega 3 supplements.
Benefits of Fish Oil

In fact the American Heart Association now recommends the intake of EPA and DHA (the two major beneficial Omega  3 fats) daily, at a dose of 1 gram a day, more for those with elevated triglycerides.

How do you get your Omega 3 essential fatty acids? By taking the best Omega 3 fish oil supplements.

Be aware that not all Omega 3 supplements are created equal. There are issues with both the quantity of DHA in each capsule as well as the purity of the fish oil, some fish oils being contaminated with heavy metals and PCBs and mercury. These are only small amounts but the best fish oil capsules contain higher levels of DHA than most others and undetectable levels of contaminants. Read the rest of this entry
